NHL Playoffs Format
On May 26, 2020, it was announced that, 24 teams (12 teams from Eastern conference & 12 teams from Western conference) will advance to this particular conference-based playoff format which is on the basis of points percentage at the time the regular season was suspended on March 12.
Top four teams from each conference will play in individual Seeding Round Robin tournaments to decide the seeding in the first round. With shootout rules, they will be played regular season overtime, with the clubs gathering points like the regular season, and, in the round-robin standings, any ties will be broken by the regular-season points percentage.
The lower eight teams from each conference will then play in the Qualifying Round and that will be a best-of-five series with playoff overtime rules. The winners from this qualifying round will then move forward to face one of the round-robin teams in the First Round.
NHL, On May 28, stated that the qualifying round and the round-robin tournament-both will count also under the playoff records, on the same day that the league announced the winners of the stats-based regular-season NHL Awards. But, on June 4, the league expressed that all series after the qualifying round, there will be remain a best-of-seven series, which will be re-seeded after each round.
